Donal Hayes
Documentary MakerDonal grew up in Cork city in the 70’s/80’s and after studying Mathematics in UCC he moved to England working for Lloyds Bank.
After a few years back in Dublin, a love of cooking and the sea brought him naturally to Kinsale where he has been a cheesemonger, a restaurateur and a helm on the local lifeboat.
After doing a lunchtime film review on local radio he got a weekly slot that lasted four years. His first radio documentary involvement was producing ‘The Wandering Celt’, a record of the life and times of the poet Desmond O’Grady.
Donal is also a writer. He wrote the critically-acclaimed play ‘The Bulman’ which was the surprise hit of 2009 Kinsale Arts Week.
He writes happily on any subject but is happiest writing on food, place or journeys. He writes regularly for the Irish Examiner and has featured in The Literary Orphan and the Newer York. He is the facilitator for Cork Creative Writers.
Donal lives on the edge of Kinsale with his wife, Miriam, and three kids.
