Met Éireann has confirmed that rainfall records for February were broken at 16 of its 25 principal weather stations last month as storms Ciara, Denis and Jorge battered the country.
It also said that new wind records for February were also set at 11 different locations.
Storm Dennis, which affected Ireland on 15 and 16 February, was one of the deepest mid-latitude storms ever observed in the North Atlantic.
A very strong Polar Jetstream, that was further south than normal, caused a seesaw pattern of vigorous depressions and active weather fronts resulting in exceptionally wet and windy weather throughout the month.
Storm Jorge on 29 February brought the strongest winds with a gust of 133 kilometres/hour recorded at Mace Head in Connemara.
Met Éireann's Weather Statement for February showed rainfall was above average everywhere in the country.
Rainfall records going back as far as 1850 were broken at Phoenix Park in Dublin and Malin Head in Donegal.
The biggest drenchings were experienced in the west, particularly in Co Mayo where rainfall records were broken throughout the county.
A total of 342mm fell at Newport, 287mm at Claremorris, and 277mm at Knock Airport during the month.
Despite setting a new monthly rainfall record at Phoenix Park, the Dublin region still experienced the lowest rainfall amounts, with 131mm recorded at Dublin Airport and 142mm at Phoenix Park last month.
