An independent review into allegations of discrimination, mistreatment and bullying made by former members of the Defence Forces was published this week.
Its conclusions were described as "very far reaching" by Tánaiste and Minister for Defence, Micheál Martin who also said that what happened to members of the Defence Force was "shocking and disgraceful".
Interviewees told the review group of bullying and sexual harassment, which had caused long-term injury and pain.
The review found that 88 per cent of female respondents said they had experienced at least one form of sexual harassment.
Many of the key allegations first came to prominence in an RTÉ radio documentary, 'Women of Honour', made by Upfront host Katie Hannon.
The publication of the review has now led the government to announce plans to establish a full statutory inquiry.
