Why are we doing this and how can you participate?

Audiences are at the heart of everything we do at RTÉ and we have to make sure that we reflect a range of views and opinions in our programmes. It is important that we have an audience that reflects the views of the wider public.

What will RTÉ collect and how will we use it?

RTÉ will collect and process the personal data that you have provided to us about yourself to select audience members for the Upfront programme. We use your contact details to contact you if you are chosen to be an audience member and so we can provide any reasonable adjustments if you are disabled.

The personal data we collect is:

  • Town, county and country of residence
  • Occupation
  • Organisation
  • Year of birth
  • Contact phone number
  • Email address
  • Previous participation in RTÉ audiences
  • Gender
  • Title
  • Marital status
  • Topics/areas of interest

The special category data we collect is:

  • Disability status
  • Political party membership
  • Activism/lobbying details

Who is the Data Controller?

RTÉ is the "data controller" of your personal information. This means that RTÉ decides what your personal information is used for, and the ways in which it is processed. For the avoidance of any doubt, your personal information will be collected and processed solely for the purposes set out in this privacy notice. As the data controller, RTÉ has the responsibility to comply, and to demonstrate compliance with, data protection law.

Lawful basis for processing your personal data

RTÉ processes your personal data for the purposes of audience selection and stores this data in its database on the basis of your explicit consent, which you may withdraw at any time without affecting the lawfulness of prior processing.

Your personal data may also be processed for broadcast and editorial purposes at set out in further detail at sections 6 and 7 of RTÉ's Privacy Policy. The legal basis on which RTÉ processes your personal information for these purposes is the performance of its public tasks under the Broadcasting Act 2009, pursuant to its freedom of expression rights and for the purposes of archiving where relevant.

Retaining your data

Your personal data will be kept for audience selection purposes for no longer than 4 years.

You have rights under data protection law.

You can request a copy of the personal data RTÉ stores about you.

You have the right to ask for the personal data we collect about you to be deleted however there are limitations and exceptions to this right which may entitle RTÉ to refuse your request.

In certain circumstances, you have the right to restrict the processing of your personal data or to object to the processing of your personal data.

You have the right to ask that we transfer the personal data to you or to another organisation, in certain circumstances.
