A community raffle and other fundraising efforts have generated a €10,000 charitable donation for cancer services in the west.

The process was driven by a Conamara family, in memory of the late Richard McDonagh, from Cill Chiaráin. He had been treated at the Corrib Ward in University Hospital Galway and his loved ones set out to honour his memory, as well as to benefit future patients.

The McDonagh family said the care he received had been provided with compassion and dignity, leaving a lasting impression on all who benefited from it.

Through a community-driven raffle at their business, a shop in Cill Chiaráin, and with further support from locals, a €10,000 target was reached.

Galway University Hospitals says the funds will go directly towards enhancing patient comfort and supporting "small but impactful improvements that make hospital stays more bearable for those in care and their families".

Mr McDonagh's daughter, Anna said, the family was deeply thankful to everyone who supported them, and that they would never forget the kindness that had been shown to them, and to their father.

Richard’s wife Anne McDonagh presented the donation to staff at the hospital.

Clinical Nurse Manager on the Corrib Ward, Monique Mulholland, said the contribution was "a testament to the strength of community and the lasting impact of compassionate care".
