The sudden death of a 34-year-old man on Saturday morning in Mullingar, Co Westmeath is being investigated by Fiosrú, the Office of the Police Ombudsman.
Gardaí received a report from a concerned member of the public for the welfare of the man, who was described as "acting in a distressed manner".
"Gardaí attended the scene of the incident where the man subsequently became unwell.
"He was brought by ambulance to the Midlands Regional Hospital, Mullingar, where he was pronounced deceased," a spokesperson for An Garda Síochána said.
The case was referred to Fiosrú by a Garda Superintendent in the Westmeath/Meath Division, as is required under Section 203 of the Policing, Security and Community Safety Act, 2024.
A member of Fiosrú's on call team of investigators attended the scene.
Fiosrú has appealed to anyone who may have seen the man interact with gardaí on the Main Street between 10am and 11am, or who were in the area at the time, to contact them.
They are also requesting dashcam or mobile phone footage of the incident or from the area at that time.
The Office of the Police Ombudsman is engaging with the man's family.
As the matter is now under investigation Fiosrú has said that it cannot make any further comment.
A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána has said that it is also not in a position to comment further.
