The Tánaiste has led tributes following the death of the former Mayor of Limerick, Kevin Kiely.

Simon Harris said he was saddened to learn of the death of the former Fine Gael councillor who had "dedicated decades of his life to public service in Limerick".

Mr Kiely was first elected to Limerick City Council in 1985 and elected mayor by fellow councillors in June 2009.

"He was someone who cared deeply about the people of Limerick's northside and about the future of the city he loved," the Fine Gael leader said.

"Whether it was championing community safety, securing funding for the Dockers Monument or advocating for better services for children with additional needs, Kevin is someone who stood up for his community."

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said: "Kevin Kiely gave many years of public service to the people of Limerick.

"As a councillor and as mayor of the city, he was deeply committed to the communities he represented and to improving life in the city he loved."

Mr Kiely was also a Peace Commissioner and a member of the Governing Authority of the University of Limerick.

He is survived by his wife Doreen, family and friends.
