Two drones delivering what is believed to be drugs and phones into the Midlands and Portlaoise Prison complex were intercepted by gardaí this week.
Gardaí in Portlaoise, including the Divisional Drugs Unit and the Detective Unit, were involved in the two-day operation.
On Monday, they said they intercepted a drone believed to be destined for the prison grounds on the Dublin Road.
The drone was carrying a package containing suspected drugs, mobile phones and other prohibited items.
A person suspected of controlling the drone was arrested and subsequently charged before the courts.
Gardaí said yesterday that a second drone, believed to be connected to this activity, was located in close proximity to the prison.
This drone also had a package containing contraband material attached.
The incident highlights ongoing efforts by An Garda Síochána, working in partnership with the Irish Prison Service, to prevent the smuggling of drugs, phones and other harmful materials into the prison system, gardaí said.
They added that gardaí "greatly appreciate the continued support of the local community" and have encouraged residents to report any suspicious activity involving drones, particularly in areas close to the prison complex.
