Paralympian and amputee, Shane McLaughlin celebrated Valentine's Day with a world record ferry pull at Ros an Mhíl in Conamara.

The Monaghan man broke his sixth world record this morning at 11.05am when he crossed the five metre line with a 120 tonne pull of Aran Island vessel, Saoirse na Farraige.

It measures 40 metres wide and nine metres long and is the largest passenger only ferry vessel registered in Irish waters.

He is the first man to pull the vessel over five metres and enter his name into the record books.

Mr McLaughlin now has six world records for vessel and truck pulls.

In 2024 he pulled an 18 tonne truck, his first pull. It led to further back-to-back world records and this morning he broke his own most recent world record of 40 tonnes.

Mr McLaughlin lost his leg in a farm accident and has competed as a Paralympian in shot put for the past six years.

"This is fantastic. I was focused, and as always, it's mind over matter. I believed I could achieve a successful pull of the fabulous 120 tonne Saoirse na Farraige passenger ferry vessel", he said said.

He was supported crossing the line by seven-year-old Galway Girl Katie Walsh from Tuam.

Katie lost her leg at the age of three in a lawnmower accident at her home. She too has displayed determination and focus listing camogie and dancing as her favourite hobbies
