President Catherine Connolly will be the guest of honour at an event to mark the 30th anniversary of the opening of Galway's Town Hall Theatre this evening.
The refurbished municipal space was reopened on this day three decades ago, by then Minister for Arts, Michael D Higgins.
The world premiere of the Martin McDonagh play, The Beauty Queen of Leenane, was the first production to be staged there.
Since then, the facility has become an integral part of the city’s cultural landscape, boasting an extensive programme of events each year and playing host to established and fledgling artistic endeavours.
The theatre is owned and managed by Galway City Council. It estimates that almost three million people have attended events at the venue and at the nearby Black Box performance space over the last 30 years.
Today’s celebration will feature music and poetry from participants including Mary Coughlan, Padraig Stevens and Rita Ann Higgins.
