A man in his 30s has appeared in court charged with causing criminal damage to Athlone Garda Station.

38-year-old Adil Muhammed of no fixed abode appeared before a sitting of Mullingar District Court.

He was charged with three counts of criminal damage at Athlone Garda Station yesterday evening.

A number of patrol cars parked outside the station were also damaged

Two of the charges relate to damaging a garda patrol car and a garda van.

While the third relates to damaging the automatic front doors, the counter and glass window of the public office of Athlone Garda Station.

In court today, gardaí objected to bail.

Judge Bernadette Owens remanded the accused in custody to Castlerea Prison.
