Over €1 million worth of damage is believed to have been caused by a fire at Meath Civil Defence's headquarters in Navan.

The blaze broke out at Moat View House in Mullaghboy Industrial Estate at around 4pm.

Several units of the Meath County Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and are continuing to fully extinguish the fire tonight.

It is understood the damage was primarily caused to the vehicle bay area of the facility and several vehicles have been destroyed.

An office complex at the headquarters remains relatively unaffected apart from significant smoke damage.

Director of Services at Meath County Council, Dara McGowan said the damage is "extensive".

He paid tribute to the local fire service who he said "managed to save half the building".

Mr McGowan said the fire has been "devastating" for staff and volunteers.

"This was their home," he said. "This was their headquarters."

"We will build it back as fast as we can," he added.

The €2.6 million state-of-the-art facility was officially opened in 2020.

Council officials believe the extent of the damage will be in excess of €1 million, primarily due to the number of vehicles that have been damaged or destroyed.
