Taoiseach Micheál Martin has paid tribute following the death of former Cork North Central TD, Máirín Quill.
Mr Martin described Ms Quill as someone who "served the people of Cork with great distinction as a city councillor, senator and a deputy in Dáil Éireann".
"Máirín was a true renaissance figure with a great sense of the future of our city," he said.
Ms Quill first stood for election as a Fianna Fáil candidate but left the party to join the Progressive Democrats at its foundation .
She served as a TD from 1987 until 1997, and then served as a Taoiseach's nominee for one term in the Seanad.
She also served as a councillor on Cork City Council for 30 years.
Mr Martin said: "Erudite and impactful, Máirín championed the arts and culture in the city of Cork."
The Taoiseach said he served on many boards with Ms Quill but "particularly enjoyed" their time together on the arts committee of Cork Corporation.
"She was always very helpful in providing advice and creative ideas. She was a true patriot and it was an honour to be her friend and colleague," he said.
"My deepest sympathies go to all her family and friends."
