Three people have been arrested after gardai and customs seized an estimated €4 million worth of cocaine.

The two men aged in their 30s and 40s and a woman aged in her 40s are being held under Section 72 of the Criminal Justice Act 2006 at a number of garda stations and can be questioned for up to one week.

The drugs were seized yesterday as part of a joint operation.

Searches were carried out on a business premises in Co Kildare and a number of houses in Co Wexford and resulted in the seizure of 58kg of suspected cocaine.

Gardaí say follow up searches have been continuing.

Officers from the Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau along with customs officials raided a property and have also seized a number of cars.

One of the men in custody is a former Sinn Féin representative in the east of the country.

Sinn Féin says the man was never elected to office and is no longer a member of the party.
