The Commemorations and Naming Committee of Dublin City Council has agreed to seek further legal advice before deciding whether to proceed with renaming Herzog Park in Rathgar in south Dublin.

Cllr Cieran Perry of the Independent Group who originally proposed the change said his group would still be pushing for the renaming when the legal advice is received.

He said there were a number of suggestions of other Jewish Irish figures after whom the park could be renamed.

However, the Committee Chair Green Party Cllr Donna Cooney said she believed there was not the same consensus about changing the name as there had been before, but that the members agreed to wait for legal advice before taking any decision.

The committee is due to meet again on 6 February.

The park got its current name in 1995, the year of the tri-millennium of Jerusalem, in honour of Chaim Herzog, the then President of Israel.

He was born in Belfast and primarily raised in Dublin.
