The main construction phase of Ennis public realm works has come to an end after two years, on time for the build-up to Christmas festivities in the Clare town.
Ennis Municipal District has organised fashion shows on O'Connell Street this weekend, showcasing stock from around 35 stores including clothing, jewellers, sports and shoe shops.
Routes through Ennis are open again to vehicular traffic with the exception of O'Connell Street, which will remain closed to traffic until 16 February.
During this period, Clare County Council is inviting the public, the business community and visitors to Ennis to share their views on future access, traffic flow, and possible pedestrianisation options for O’Connell Street through an online survey and in-person consultations.
The online survey goes live on the Clare County Council website today until January 4, 2026, with physical copies of the survey available at council buildings including libraries.
In mid-January, Clare County Council will begin a formal Section 38 process, inviting further public submissions.
Clare County Council Director of Service with responsibility for Ennis MD, Jason Murphy, said: "This milestone marks an important and positive moment for the town, as the major construction works, spanning almost two years, comes to an end.
"Clare County Council wishes to thank the local business community, residents, and visitors for their patience and cooperation throughout the works.
"The period before and after Christmas is now a huge opportunity to experience O’Connell Street without any vehicular traffic and construction works.
"It will also allow businesses, shoppers, visitors, and the local community time to provide informed feedback on the potential and any challenges associated with the possible pedestrianisation of the street."
Mayor of Ennis Cllr Mary Howard is encouraging residents, businesses, and visitors, to take part in the consultation.
"Your feedback will play a vital role in shaping the future of O’Connell Street and ensuring it meets the needs of our community. Together, we can create a vibrant, welcoming town centre that works for all."
The street fashion show takes place on Saturday, 13 December at midday and 2.30pm.
