While the big toys of 2025 were on display on the Late Late Toy Show last night, popular toys from the past have gone on show in Dundalk.

A special Christmas exhibition opened in the County Museum in Dundalk this week, featuring toys from the past hundred years.

The items were donated to the museum over the last 30 years and include board games from the 1930s, a wooden train set, dolls and computer games from the 1980s.

The Curator of the County Museum said that the exhibition, entitled From the Collection - A Christmas Special, gives people an opportunity to step back from the frenzy of the build up to Christmas and "rediscover the magic of simpler times".

Brian Walsh said all the toys had been collected by the museum over the past 30 years.

"Some of them are handmade, others are shop bought, but all of them have a story behind them, and that is something that we love about each artefact.

"In many ways, the exhibition is at the heart of what we do, collecting items from the past for the enjoyment of future generations, be they young or old," he said.

Visitors are invited to share a festive memory about a toy they longed for from Santa Claus, by writing it down on a post it note and revealing whether it arrived or stayed a wish.

The notes will form part of a colourful collage of "childhood hopes and dreams" that will be part of the exhibition.

It is open to the public throughout December and into January.
