Almost half a million euro worth of suspected cocaine has been seized in Co Limerick.

The discovery was made after gardaí stopped a van in the village of Hospital yesterday afternoon.

The driver, who is in his 20s, was arrested and brought to a garda station in Limerick city where he is being detained under Section 2 of the Drug Trafficking Act.

As part of ongoing investigations targeting the sale and supply of controlled drugs, gardaí attached to the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit stopped the van in the village and discovered a concealment of suspected cocaine with an estimated street value of €493,920.

They also seized €3,000 in cash and a number of electronic items.

A follow-up search was conducted at a residence in Castletroy and a further €2,075 and a small quantity of cannabis were seized.

Gardaí say the seized drugs will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland for analysis.

The seizure was part of an investigation targeting organised crime under Operation Tara.
