Two men arrested over attempted murder of former PSNI detective

Two men have been arrested in Ardboe, Co Tyrone as part of the investigation into the attempted murder of Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) Detective Chief Inspector John Caldwell in Omagh on 22 February 2023.

Detective Chief Inspector Caldwell was shot several times at a sports complex in Omagh, Co Tyrone in the presenbce of son, while he was off duty packing up after coaching a youth football team.

The two men, aged 37 and 73 were detained under the Terrorism Act yesterday evening.

They were taken to Musgrave Serious Crime Suite for questioning.

Several people have previously appeared in court charged with offences linked to the shooting attack.

Mr Caldwell has since retired from the PSNI on medical grounds.

Last year, he was presented with the King's Police Medal for distinguished services in the police service at Buckingham Palace.

Speaking then, he said he was still recovering from his injuries after being shot nine times.

"The recovery is going very well. That's thanks to the medical teams and thanks to the support from family and friends, and from my wife and my son," he added.

The attack on Mr Caldwell was claimed by the New IRA in 2023.
