Businesses in Limerick have been invited to 'Leave a Light On' in their shopfronts to brighten the city streets, making them more welcoming for residents and visitors after dark.

Limerick City and County Council said local businesses will be eligible for a grant to help offset expenses.

The council said the initiative is aimed at enhancing the vibrancy, safety, and sense of community in urban areas during the darker winter months.

Running from 17 November to 31 December, the campaign invites businesses to leave a light on until midnight to 1am.

The initiative is part of Limerick’s broader commitment to supporting the night-time economy and fostering a safer, more inclusive city environment.

A grant of €250 will be provided to premises taking part. The council encourages the use of energy-efficient lighting, such as LED bulbs, to ensure sustainability remains a core part of the campaign.

Night-time economy adviser at Limerick City and County Council, Craig Power said, "This initiative is a simple yet powerful way to support our local businesses, enhance public safety, and bring warmth to our city during the winter months. We hope to see Limerick lit up with community spirit."

The grant scheme is part of the Night-Time Economy pilot programme, supported by the Department of Culture, Communications and Sport.
