Planning permission has been granted for a train station in Moyross by Limerick City and County Council.

The new station is to be located at the rear of Corpus Christi Primary School and Moyross Community Enterprise Centre, and will connect Moyross, Caherdavin and Thomondgate with the greater Limerick area.

Iarnród Éireann is leading the project, which has been described by the planning authority as a "crucial piece of infrastructure".

The decision allows for the progression to the next stages of the project, including design, procurement, and further stakeholder engagement.

The council said it represents a transformative investment in sustainable transport and urban regeneration.

Mayor of Limerick John Moran said: "A modern and accessible train station will connect Moyross and surrounding areas like Caherdavin, Thomondgate, and the wider Northside, more directly with greater Limerick, other major cities, and, hopefully soon, Shannon Airport."

Cllr Catherine Slattery said securing planning permission for the train station is a major milestone in the journey towards greater inclusion and opportunity across Limerick.

"For decades, this community has called for better connectivity and we are now one step closer to delivering it," she said.

Director General of the council Dr Pat Daly said the approval of planning permission is "a powerful statement of intent for balanced regional development".
