The Guinness Cork Jazz Festival is in full swing this weekend.

The Jazz features more than 500 musicians from Ireland and abroad, performing across 100 events, in almost 80 venues.

Now in its 47th year, the five-day festival is the biggest on Cork's cultural calendar from Thursday to Bank Holiday Monday.

Local jazz band Code of Behaviour and international artist Nubya Garcia are among the musicians taking part this year.

Sean Heary, trumpet player with Code of Behaviour, said the festival is important musically to Cork.

"It think it's the energy that Cork gets from it, there's so many people around and every venue is packed.

"It's a great opportunity to hear music that you wouldn't usually hear at any other festival. That's why it's so important to have The Jazz."

One of the headliners at this year's festival, Nubya Garcia, is one of the most prominent saxophonists in the world and leading the new wave of jazz coming out of the UK.

She is performing at The Everyman this evening.

"It's really, really lively in Cork, and I'm really excited to be playing later," she said.

The audience at her gig tonight can expect to hear music from her new album Odyssey and favourites from her first album Sauce.

"You can expect high energy jazz, let's say."

"There's a new generation putting their stamp whilst also feeding into the tradition of the music, and bringing lots of other genres and other energies into the music," Ms Garcia said.

The festival attracts over 100,000 visitors, virtually doubling the population of Cork, and organisers say it is worth €45 million to the local economy.

Cork Airport is reporting a 12% rise in passenger numbers year on year, with revellers travelling especially for the music event.

In addition to ticketed shows, there is a free Guinness music trail in more than 70 hotels and pubs across the city, Douglas and Kinsale.
