Hero's welcome for Dublin's All-Ireland football champions

The Dublin footballers received a hero's welcome in Smithfield this evening following their TG4 All-Ireland final win on Sunday.

The team secured their seventh All-Ireland title after an emphatic 2-16 to 0-10 win over Meath, with captain Carla Rowe and Niamh Hetherton scoring the goals.

Tonight’s event had been scheduled for yesterday but was put back by one day due to the bad weather.

But that did not stop the team celebrating as they spent yesterday with the children at CHI Crumlin.

Today they spent time winding down on the Grand Canal, and were welcomed onto the big stage in Smithfield by Lord Mayor Ray McAdam shortly after 7pm.

"It's been phenomenal to spend the couple of hours with the team and with our families, our partners, our friends, has been unreal," captain Carla Rowe told RTÉ.

"Just to have Brendan Martin back in Dublin and to be looking forward to stuff like this is really exciting."

It has been a remarkable few years for the Dubs, who have now taken six out of the last nine titles.

All of the county's seven have come in the past 15 years.

Co-manager Paul Casey said it's the quiet years that make people embrace moments like today more.

"The years you don't win it you realise the years where you're lucky enough to win it - how special they are.

"The girls have put in an enourmous amount of hard work, I think that's really satisfying to see them get their rewards."
