An exhibition in Galway will feature photographs spanning half a century, of the Druid Theatre Company by renowned Connacht Tribune photographer, Joe O'Shaughnessy.

The 50 photographs, marking 50 years of Druid, have been selected from an extensive archive dating back to 1975, when the trailblazing company was launched by a group of students in University College Galway DramSoc.

Druid has remained rooted in Galway over five decades alongside the company's outstanding success on the global stage.

Mr O'Shaughnessy's collection features images of actors and staff across various productions and events. It captures key performances, special moments in time and draws upon the creative energy that defines the company's legacy.

Many of the photographs on display feature names synonymous with Druid and innovative theatre.

They include director, Garry Hynes and actors Mick Lally and Marie Mullen - the trio who co-founded Druid in 1975.

Born in Galway, Mr O'Shaughnessy's interest in photography started when he was at school in the early 1970s.

His work is now widely recognised for its storytelling power, with numerous national and international awards to his name.

He has worked closely with Druid since its founding, and his photographs capture the evolution of Druid over the last five decades.

The exhibition is free and will be opened by First Lady, Sabina Higgins, who previously acted with Druid, at The Kenny Gallery this afternoon.

In addition, several of Joe's photographs capturing daily life in Galway over the years, will feature at the 'President Michael D. Higgins - Through the Lens' exhibition at Galway City Library.

"Joe O'Shaughnessy's Druid" runs until 14 August as part of the Galway International Arts Festival.
