Some 4,000 cyclists have taken part in the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle.

The 170km event is in its 43rd iteration and features cyclists raising funds for nine selected charities among others.

The event started this morning in Killarney before moving towards Killorglin and anti-clockwise around the Ring of Kerry.

This year's selected 'Tier 1' charities are Breakthrough Cancer Research, Brú Columbanus, Focus Ireland, Kerry Hospice Foundation, Kerry Parents and Friends, The Irish Kidney Association, Jack and Jill Children’s Foundation, Social Action Group Rathmore and Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House.

Participants can also raise funds for one of six other charities through the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle Central Charity Fund.

Since the inaugural cycle in 1982, the event has raised over €20 million for more than 200 charities and voluntary organisations.

Former Irish runner and Olympic silver medallist Sonia O'Sullivan was this year's ambassador for Breakthrough Cancer Research.
