Former Louth senator John McGahon has been appointed as the CEO of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce.

Mr McGahon previously announced he would be taking a step back from politics after unsuccessfully contesting the general election for Fine Gael last November.

He had been found not guilty in 2022 for physically attacking a man outside a pub in Co Louth in 2018.

However, Mr McGahon was found 65% liable in a subsequent civil trial and was ordered to pay €39,000 in damages.

A spokesperson for Dundalk Chamber of Commerce today confirmed his appointment as the business group's CEO.

They said: "John McGahon's extensive experience in public service has equipped him with strong policy expertise and combined with his skills in strategic planning and public engagement, demonstrate his ability to represent and advocate for local business and community interests effectively.

"He has a deep understanding of government processes, making him well-prepared to lead Dundalk Chamber as CEO."

Mr McGahon, who also previously served on Louth County Council, said he was delighted to take up the role.

He said: "Dundalk has a proud business tradition, rooted in innovation, community spirit, and cross-border cooperation.

"I look forward to building on that legacy; supporting our local enterprises, attracting new investment, and strengthening the voice of business across the region."

He said it is a great opportunity to work alongside the wider Dundalk Chamber of Commerce team and ensure the town "continues to thrive as a dynamic hub for business".

Meanwhile, Hanna McDonnell, President of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce, said: "John's experience and strategic vision will be invaluable in advancing the Chamber's mission and positioning Dundalk as a hub for business excellence."
