Local communities in Conamara have once again highlighted what they say is a continued lack of action on improving road safety in the area.

The R336 is the main route westwards out of Galway city and runs through the villages of Na Forbacha, An Spidéal, Indreabhán and Bearna.

The demonstration is a follow-up to the community walk last month, calling for the immediate implementation of safety measures.

Locals are calling for a number of dedicated crossings close to schools in the area.

Hundreds of people, including parents and children, teaching staff and community members, walked from Séipéal Réalt na Mara to Scoil na bhForbacha, demanding change.

They say their planned protests are gathering momentum and there is widespread public support for immediate safety measures.

As well as pedestrian crossings, the campaigners want reduced speed limits, wider footpaths and safer cycling routes.

In a show of tradition, the children of Rang a 2 in Scoil na bhForbacha returned to school this morning, dressed in their First Holy Communion outfits, after receiving the Sacrament of the Eucharist at the weekend.
