Iarnród Éireann's plans to introduce rail fare changes from tomorrow have been met with mixed reaction by commuters and local representatives.
The changes are being introduced as a result of an extension and a re-mapping of the travel zones in the greater Dublin area.
The old Short Hop Zone, which previously ended at the likes of Balbriggan, has been extended to a 50 kilometre ring around Dublin.
The newly-named Dublin Commuter Zone will now encompass Drogheda, Enfield, Kildare Town and Rathdrum.
The new zone a person's departure and arrival stations fall into will determine whether their fare will increase or decrease.
For example, a single cash fare for an adult travelling from Drogheda or Laytown to Connolly Station in Dublin currently costs €10.85.
However, from tomorrow, the cost of the same journey will drop to €6, provided the person is using a Leap Card to pay for their fare.
But fares will also increase in certain areas.
An adult travelling from Skerries or Balbriggan to Connolly today will pay €3 but that will increase to €3.90 from tomorrow.
The new zonal system will also bring the Leap Card tap-on and tap-off system to certain stations for the very first time.
This will allow rail users to pay for their journey using the balance in the 'e-purse' attached to their card.
