Garda Commissioner Drew Harris has said gardaí are still treating the case of the missing Kerry farmer Michael Gaine as a missing persons investigation and have no definite line of inquiry.

Mr Harris said the investigation team has "no leads" in the case of the 56-year-old who disappeared on 20 March near Kenmare.

The Commissioner said gardaí are "still, at this moment, trying to work out what happened to Michael Gaine and how between the 20th of March and the 21st of March in effect he goes missing and as yet we can find no trace of him".

He also said while they have received a lot of assistance from the public, he renewed the appeal for anyone with information to come forward.

Mr Harris was speaking following a two-hour briefing from investigators in Co Kerry before he attended the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors.

CCTV footage was released of Michael Gaine in Kenmare before he went missing

"There is a huge amount of work done in inquiries both in terms of the physical searching operation, but also the recovery of CCTV, dash cam footage, and also house to house inquiries, together with all the other inquiries one would make in terms of proof of life and trying to actually what happened between the 20th and 21st of March," he said.

Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan has said gardaí briefed him on the case had given him no indication that they believed Mr Gaine had been murdered.

Mr Gaine was last seen in a Centra shop in Kenmare on Thursday, 20 March.

An Garda Síochána continues to appeal to any person who may have any information on Mr Gaine's whereabouts to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 667 1160, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any garda station.
