Watch: Special sighting of Basking Sharks off Kerry coast

Marine enthusiasts in west Kerry were privy to a special sighting of three Basking Sharks in waters in the local harbour at Daingean Uí Chúis.

The Basking Shark is the North Atlantic's largest species of fish, the second largest in the world, second only to the Whale Shark.

They can grow to 12 metres in length, can weigh up to six tonnes and feed primarily on plankton.

They can often be seen off the west and southwest coast between April and August, around na Blascaodaí, in particular when the water is around 12C.

People gathered on the beach at Binn Bán to catch a glimpse of the sharks as they swam in pristine waters close to Daingean Uí Chúis.

Basking sharks have been afforded sanctuary in Irish waters since 1980 due to measures passed by former taoiseach Charles Haughey.
