Firefighters tackling wildfire on Fanad Peninsula

Four units of the Donegal Fire Service and a helicopter are dealing with a wildfire on the Fanad Peninsula in Co Donegal.

Senior Assistant Chief Fire Officer at Donegal Fire Service Dermot Brady said the wildfire started in the Kerrykeel area of the Fanad Peninsula around 10.30am.

Mr Brady said units from Milford, Letterkenny, An Fál Carrach and An Clochán Liath fire stations consisting of more than 30 firefighters are dealing with the wildfire.

A helicopter contracted from Executive Helicopters equipped with a Bambi-bucket capable of carrying and dropping significant amounts of water is also on the scene.

Mr Brady said the helicopter's assistance is invaluable, especially in rough terrain, as they are dealing with at present.

No damage to structures or property has been reported at present. Some limited damage has happened to the forestry in the area.

Mr Brady expects the wildfire to continue well into the evening.
