An investigation is under way after the body of a 78-year-old man was discovered in his home at Mayfield in Cork city last night.
The alarm was raised by a neighbour who had not seen the man for a number of days.
Gardai discovered the man's body at the ground floor apartment at Glenamoy Lawn at around 9pm.
The scene was cordoned off and a forensic examination was carried out.
The man's body was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be carried out tomorrow.
Gardaí say the results of that examination will direct the nature of their investigation.
