McDonald's Ireland has announced that customers can now order through Gaeilge at its self-service kiosks.

The restaurant chain said the initiative is part its "ongoing commitment to embracing and celebrating Ireland’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage".

McDonald’s said the introduction of the Irish language option will "allow customers to seamlessly navigate the menu, customise their orders, and complete transactions in Irish at the touch of a button".

The option is only available in the Republic.

It said it held a trial period in the McDonald’s in Westside Shopping Centre in Galway during January.

"The overwhelmingly positive response from our Galway trial highlighted the demand and enthusiasm for this initiative," said Franchisee of Westside McDonald’s Aaron Byrne.

"As a brand that is deeply rooted in Irish communities, we are proud to support the Irish language and provide our customers with the option to engage with us in the language of their choice," he added.

Ar an tseoladh i nGaillimh, dúirt craoltóir Dáithí Ó Sé: "Is iontach a thabhairt faoi deara go bhfuil McDonald’s ag tacú leis an nGaeilge ar an leibhéal seo.

"Tugann an tionscnamh seo an deis do dhaoine an teanga a úsáid go nádúrtha ina saol laethúil, rud atá thar a bheith tábhachtach do thodhchaí agus d’fhorbairt na Gaeilge.
