A new assisted living development in Dundalk, Co Louth has been officially opened.

The houses in Coulter Close will be allocated to older people and people with disabilities on the local authority housing waiting list.

Inclusion Louth, which supports people with intellectual disabilities, initiated the project.

Louth County Council then partnered with approved housing body, Tuath Housing to deliver the seven houses in this long-term assisted living residential development, which is located just off the Armagh Road.

Saint John of God Community Services, the Department of Housing and the Health Service Executive were also involved in the project.

Intellectual Disability Services from Saint John of God Community Services occupy one of the houses in Coulter Close, an initiative which was funded through the HSE.

The units are all at ground level and have access to a common area and a garden, which the developers have said is designed to prioritise accessibility, independence and community interaction.

These homes were funded through the Department of Housing's Capital Assistance Scheme, which provides for housing for priority groups such as older people, people with disabilities and individuals experiencing homelessness.

The land for the project was provided by Louth County Council and funding for care provision came from the HSE.

Separately, Louth County Council has also commenced four other social housing projects, which will see 271 new homes built across the county over the next 20 months.

The local authority has said the contracts for the four projects are worth around €90 million.

The developments include: Bakery View, Ballymakenny Road, Drogheda (97 units); Greenhills Grange, Drogheda (46 units); Ravel Drive, Dunleer (70 units); and An Mullach, Mullavally, Louth Village (58 units).

The council has said the four projects "will deliver high-quality homes and sustainable communities, utilising accelerated delivery routes and technologies" under the Department of Housing’s Accelerated Delivery Programme.
