A number of businesses have been broken into on either side of the Meath/Westmeath border overnight.

Gardaí have confirmed that they received reports of a number of burglaries at premises in Ballivor and Kildalkey in Co Meath.

Several businesses in the nearby Co Westmeath village of Rathwire were also targeted.

The burglaries took place in the early hours of this morning and a sum of cash is believed to have been taken from one of the businesses.

It is understood that no arrests have yet been made and gardaí said that investigations are ongoing.

Aontú Leader and Meath West TD Peadar Tóibín has condemned the incidents, describing it as a "shocking crime spree".

Mr Tóibín called for the reopening of garda stations across the county, adding that a protest would be held this Saturday afternoon calling for people to no longer tolerate such damage.
