Cavan County Council has decided to grant permission for a major extension to Cavan General Hospital.

Under the approved plans, a new five-storey extension to accommodate an emergency department on the lower ground floor of the hospital will be constructed.

The extension will also provide the capacity for around 50 additional in-patient hospital beds.

The 7,588sq/m development will also include an endoscopy unit.

The addition of 37 new parking spaces, including ten accessible spaces, four EV charging spaces and seven motorbike spaces has also been approved.

Cavan County Council has said the decision to grant permission for the development to the HSE is subject to 19 conditions, some of which include maintaining proper planning and public health.

The decision can be appealed to An Bord Pleanála within the next four weeks.
