Hundreds of people have gathered in Dublin city centre to celebrate the Lunar New Year Festival.

The event, organised by Dublin City Council, was traditionally celebrated as Chinese New Year but was rebranded so that all Asian communities, who celebrate Lunar New Year, could come together to showcase their culture and traditions.

The free event is taking place at Meeting House Square and the surrounding areas.

The entertainment ranges from Tai Chi demonstrations to dragon dances to Mongolian calligraphy.

In recognition of it being the year of the snake, much of the entertainment and activities are based around this theme.

A performer participating in the event said it is particularly important for him with Chinese parents to have such an event as it reminds him and others to stay close to their roots.

Some parents said they come to the event each year with their children as it is important to find out about the different cultures that make up Irish society.
