Labour TD for Wexford, George Lawlor, has called on the incoming Minister for Enterprise to immediately engage with the Wexford management of financial services firm BNY.

Up to 95% of the 310 Wexford-based employees are to be transferred or made redundant, RTÉ News understands.

A meeting took place today between management and staff at BNY's Wexford base.

The multi-national financial services giant confirmed that it will be closing its Wexford office.

There is a highly skilled workforce in BNY that could transition to other aspects of this financial service, Mr Lawlor said, and a number of options are available to the Minister.

The company also has offices in Dublin and Cork, but these locations are not expected to be affected.

Speaking on RTÉ's Today with Claire Byrne, Mr Lawlor said it may not be a good option for workers to be told they may have to commute to Dublin to retain their jobs.

"Armageddon for the minister may sound one way, but it could be very different for other people."

Mr Lawlor asked why the Wexford site had been singled out by the company.

Minister for Entrerprise, Trade and Employment Peter Burke has said there will be options for employees following the "closure" of the Wexford office.
