The National Union of Journalists has held vigils in both Dublin and Limerick to protest against the killing of journalists in Gaza.
The Irish executive council of the NUJ asked members to gather to extend solidarity to their sister union in Palestine and to remember all the journalists killed in the conflict, as well as expressing their opposition to the banning of international media from working in Gaza.
Journalist Emma O'Kelly, a member of the NUJ Executive council, told the gathering in Limerick that 142 journalists working in Gaza were now confirmed dead and that hundreds of others have been injured and tortured.
She said this killing of journalists is both unprecedented and calculated, and is a dangerous precedent for the future.
In addition to this she said the NUJ was also protesting at the banning of international journalists from working in Gaza.
This, she said, prevents journalists from bearing witness to and recording events there and consequently contributes to the suppression of information about what is happening in the conflict.
The NUJ vigil in Limerick took place alongside a vigil held by the Limerick Palestine Solidarity group which meets regularly in Limerick city centre to highlight the ongoing war in Gaza and the wider implications of the conflict for the state of Palestine.
