The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) has opened a public consultation to inform its independent statutory review into urgent and emergency care in the midwest region.

The authority is seeking the views of patients, family members and members of the public and submissions are open until 15 January 2025.

Earlier this year, the Minister for Health asked HIQA to conduct the review with the main objective of ensuring safe, quality care in the region.

HIQA has been tasked with considering the case for a second emergency department within the region, in the context of the population changes in recent years and the pressures in University Hospital Limerick.

It followed persistent overcrowding in UHL and the death of Aoife Johnston from sepsis in the emergency department in December 2022.

The HIQA review is due to be completed by next summer.
