Donegal: The story of the count

How it started ...

In this five-seat constituency, Sinn Féin's Pearse Doherty was the first to be elected on count one, with 18,898 first preference votes - more than 6,000 over the needed quota of 12, 771.

Second past the post was fellow Sinn Féin candidate Pádraig MacLochlainn with 13,095 votes.

It was a long wait for Fianna Fáil's Pat The Cope Gallagher, who was elected after reaching the quota on the 15th count.

First elected to the Dáil for Donegal South West in 1981 and a former MEP, this is the eleventh time Mr Gallagher has contested a general election.

From Dungloe, his nickname - 'The Cope' - was originally his grandfather's, and refers to the family involvement in the Co-operative movement in Donegal.

The final two seats were filled on the 16th count by Charles Ward of the 100% Redress Party (11,714 votes) and Fianna Fáil's Charlie McConalogue (11,683 votes).
