Dublin Fingal West: The story of the count

How it started ...

As a new constituency, there was always going to be a degree of uncertainty about how Dublin Fingal West would pan out.

For Sinn Féin's Louise O'Reilly, though, it was a similar outcome to her 2020 result in Fingal - as she topped the poll once again.

Though this time she had to wait until count four before she reached the quota.

In the race for seats two and three, Labour's Robert O’Donoghue, Fine Gael’s Grace Boland and Fianna Fáil’s Lorraine Clifford-Lee were all relatively neck and neck from the outset. Meanwhile, Independent Tony Murphy was not too far behind.

Outgoing Green Party TD Joe O’Brien was far off the pace, however, and conceded early on that he was set to lose his seat.

As the counts progressed Mr O’Donoghue proved to be quite transfer-friendly - allowing him to build a lead on the chasing pack.

Mr Murphy also did well on transfers, which ultimately saw him pass out Ms Clifford-Lee on the fifth count and close the gap on Ms Boland.

But, with the Fianna Fáil candidate excluded, the transfers in the final count weighed heavily in favour of Ms Boland.

In the end, both she and Mr O’Donoghue passed the quota, with the race concluding after six counts.
