Dublin Central: The story of the count

How it started ...

In a dramatic finish to the most controversial count in the capital, Gerard Hutch, also known as the Monk, narrowly missed out on a seat in Dáil Eireann when transfers from a series of eliminations eventually favoured Labour's Marie Sherlock.

Ms Sherlock joins Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald, Fine Gael's Paschal Donohoe and the Social Democrats candidate Gary Gannon in the Dáil.

The Green Party's Neasa Hourigan lost her seat here.

Former MEP Clare Daly failed to make waves here after moving from her traditional north Dublin base, while Fianna Fáil's Mary Fitzpatrick, who has been trying to win a seat in this constituency since Bertie Ahern, failed on her fifth attempt to get elected.

This election also marked a higher turnout in the constituency, some of which may have been mobilised by Mr Hutch who admitted he had encouraged first time voters to register for the election.
