Cork East: The story of the count

How it started ...

After 21 hours and across two days, the count for the four-seater East Cork constituency was declared and not without big surprises.

The first elected candidate after reaching the quota was Fianna Fáil's James O'Connor.

But the surprises were to come later.

Social Democrats candidate Liam Quaide posted on social media that he did not believe that he would win a seat.

Fine Gael's Mark Stanton, son of outgoing Fine Gael TD David, was the bookies favourite.

But in end the voters of Cork East chose his running mate, long-term Fine Gael Councillor Noel McCarthy from Fermoy.

Sinn Féin's Pat Buckley, while halving his vote, was also elected.

Fianna Fáil's James O'Connor was elected after reaching the quota with 9,924.

The remaining three candidates were elected without reaching the quota, they include Mr McCarthy, Mr Buckley and Mr Quaide.
