More than 130 staff at a community disability service in Co Longford have begun industrial action in an ongoing pay row.

It centres on the failure of the HSE to sanction incremental pay increases that unions claim are due to staff under pre-existing agreements.

A ballot saw an overwhelming majority of staff, who are represented by the trade union Fórsa, unanimously back the commencement of industrial action.

The centre, which was founded by parents and friends, provides services for people with an intellectual disability.

Derek Scanlon stepped down as CEO this year and was replaced by Marian Keigher.

The work-to-rule action got under way this morning.
