A book has been returned to Athlone Library 53-years after it was borrowed.

In a post on social media this evening, the library posted a photo of 'Down all the days' which showed that it was due to be returned by the 8 April 1971.

Inside the book there is a warning that a book kept longer than the 14 days allowed will incur a fine of a penny a week or a portion of a week afterwards.

More than five decades later, the book was returned to Athlone library.

Records show the book was taken out a number of times in the early 1970s (Photo credit: Westmeath Libraries)

"Good thing we don't do late fines anymore!" the post on Facebook read.
