Court proceedings against a former TD, accused of drug driving, have been adjourned until next year.

Colm Keaveney has been charged with driving with cocaine in his system, contrary to the Road Traffic Act. He faces another charge of driving without insurance on the same date.

The offences are alleged to have occurred at Cummer, Tuam, Co Galway on 12 June 2023.

The case has been put back until January, when a witness from the Medical Bureau of Road Safety (MBRS) will be available to give evidence.

Mr Keaveney's solicitor outlined at an earlier hearing that he wanted to canvass a number of issues with the MBRS, in relation to the manner in which a blood sample taken from his client was tested.

Gearóid Geraghty said the sample was first analysed for the presence of alcohol and that the same sample was subsequently tested for the presence of other drugs.

That revealed the presence of benzoylecgonine, commonly known as cocaine.

Mr Geraghty said his concerns centred around the fact that the testing that revealed the presence of cocaine was not carried out on a sealed sample.

Mr Keaveney was arrested at a multi-agency checkpoint near Tuam on 12 June 2023.

He is also facing a third charge of allegedly driving without insurance at Vicar Street in Tuam last July.

Judge Vincent Deane remanded the accused on continuing bail to appear before the Court again, on 25 January 2025.

Mr Keaveney was elected as a Labour Party TD for Galway East in 2011, but subsequently left the party and joined Fianna Fáil. He lost his Dáil seat in 2016 and went on to serve on Galway County Council.

He no longer holds elected office.
