Ireland has had a particularly miserable summer, with rainy days far outnumbering the ones spent in the sun.

However, that does not seem to have deterred tourists from visiting our shores this season.

Eddie Riley, Operations Manager at Big Bus Dublin, a company which runs open-top bus tours across the capital, said that while the weather has not done the company any favours, it has not upset their passenger numbers.

He told RTÉ's News at One: "The weather hasn't done us any favours this summer but again you have a lot of people from hotter climates and sometimes they’re laughing and joking that their enjoying the cooler weather and if the rain gets bad they can just go under the covers downstairs.

"So the weather hasn’t impacted us too bad, but a couple of sunny days would have done us a few favours this year as well.

"We've the benefit of being in so many cities around the world... and Dublin seems to be on par with how all our other cities as well."

Shane Young is the general manager of Killary Adventure Company in Co Galway, which offers accommodation and around 20 different outdoor activities for their guests.

"There's no such thing as bad weather, just bad gear, and a lot of international guests are very happy it’s not 35-40 degrees and enjoy the wet weather," he told the same programme.

"Irish people tend to give out a bit more but once everybody's outside and doing something, so if you’re going kayaking, it doesn’t matter if you get wet - you’re going in the water anyway.

"We’ve had quite a good summer in terms of a lot of people coming here, we’re very lucky we have our own accommodation - it can be difficult for tourists to find accommodation in west Conamara and we’re very lucky we provide that for everybody," he said.

Dublin can be considered quite an expensive city in terms of accommodation and eating out.

For Big Bus Tours Dublin, while the UK market seems to be put off by the capital's high costs, tourists from other parts of the world do not seem to mind.

Eddie said: "Most people that are in Dublin have accepted the price, the UK market seems to be deterred by it.

"The UK market hasn't really showed up for us the last two years, that’s down to costs in Dublin not appealing to them, but the North American markets and European markets have been helping keep the numbers up where we want them to be.

"People that comment on the price of accommodation, drinks, food, they're well aware if they go to other major cities they’re in a similar situation with hotel rates being high so we don’t have a standalone problem in Dublin."

As an adventure centre, Killary offers a cheaper alternative to other adventure activities in other European countries, according to Shane.

"People will always complain about the price no matter what they are but if you compare it with across Europe, if you compare what we do as an activity hall with skiing in France, we're a lot cheaper," he said.
