Over 9.5 million cigarettes with a retail value of €8 million have been seized by Revenue officials at Rosslare Europort in Co Wexford.

The cigarettes, branded as 'Marlboro Gold', were discovered yesterday in a freight unit that had been on a ferry that arrived from Dunkirk, France.

Revenue said a man in his 20s was questioned over the seizure.

In a statement, Revenue said they represented a potential loss of €6.3m to the Exchequer.

It added investigations are ongoing.
