Parts of Co Galway will be without power tonight due to severe damage to the network caused by lightning strikes, ESB Networks has said.
In a statement, ESB Networks said lightning overnight caused damage to infrastructure, causing power outages which affected the Midlands, West, North-West and South-West.
It said its crews were continuing to work to restore power to all customers and repair damage to infrastructure.
As of 6pm this evening, 4,000 customers were without power, down from this morning's peak of 36,000.
ESB Networks apologised for the inconvenience caused.
